When Families Learn That Their Child Is Using Drugs,
They Are Often Overwhelmed and Don’t Know What to Do
However, chances of recovery for youth are excellent when treatment includes:
· A family component
· Proven treatment methods
· Quality aftercare
Family involvement is a key part of youth recovery. This project will 1) stress the importance of families in their youth's recovery and then 2) give them the tools to be a part of that recovery.

State-Specific Substance Abuse Information
Each state, in the United States, has its own substance abuse treatment process. A web site and 1-800 number for state-specific youth treatment information and other resources will be developed in each state. In North Carolina, the web site is www.NCFamiliesUnited.org/Abuse.html and the 1-800 number, in English and Spanish, is 1-800-897-7494.
Multicultural Public Service Announcements (PSAs) for Families
PSAs will be made to encourage families to be a part of their youth's treatment and to give them information on the steps they should take in their state.
Five multicultural PSAs are being produced, so that as many families as possible can be helped:
· African American
· Native American
· Latino (subtitled in Spanish)
· Asian American
· Caucasian
Advisers from these five multicultural groups have:
· Approved their group's PSA script
· Identified a PSA narrator who will make the PSA meaningful to their group
The same PSAs will be used in all states with modified endings, so that they end with the link to the state-specific informational web site and 1-800 number for the state in which they will be shown.
